The language programme aims to introduce oral, listening and written Cantonese and English skills as well as introduce local cultures to EMs to enable them to communicate in Cantonese and English in daily life and facilitate their social integration.
Different kinds of tailor-made activities are designed for EMs especially EM new arrivals to assist them access to public services and increase understanding on community resources and local culture as well as enhance social support networks, so as to facilitate their early social integration.
Due to cultural difference and language barriers, EMs faces a lot of difficulties in adapting to the local community. EMs have diverse needs in terms of their age and developmental stage. The designated programmes and supportive services will be provided to support their personal development and social integration as well as promote positive interaction with local Chinese.
The Centre will set up a youth unit to provide dedicated programmes to help the personal development and social integration of EM youths. The programmes focus on self-understanding and self-management, potential realization, self-resilience, self-confidence, teamwork building, healthy lifestyle and positive social values.
Some EM students have difficulties in homework and studies, especially Chinese and Mathematics. Their families may not be able to provide enough support for them, so there is a demand for after-school tutorial classes. The class aims to assist ethnic minority children with their homework and to provide supervision and learning support services, especially enhancing their Chinese reading and writing skills as well as mathematical knowledge.
